Before Nets: Basketball's First Hoops Were Real Peach Baskets!
The very first basketball games, invented in 1891, were played with actual peach baskets nailed to gymnasium railings. This meant players or officials had to manually retrieve the ball after every successful shot, stopping the game's flow.
Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor at Springfield College, devised basketball as a less injury-prone sport for his students during the harsh New England winter. He initially used two half-bushel peach baskets as goals, affixing them ten feet high, with a soccer ball. The solid bottoms of these baskets necessitated a pause in play after each score to climb up and poke the ball out, a cumbersome process. This fundamental design flaw quickly led to the invention of open-ended hoops and nets, allowing the ball to pass through and thus accelerating the game.
