Canned Poop: The Prank That Became Priceless Art?

Canned Poop: The Prank That Became Priceless Art?

In 1961, Italian artist Piero Manzoni created 90 tins, each supposedly containing 30 grams of his own feces, then sold them at their weight equivalent in gold, challenging the very definition of art.

Manzoni's provocative work, titled 'Merda d'artista' (Artist's Shit), was a searing critique of the art market and the commodification of the artist's persona. He declared the tins were '100% genuine Artist's Shit' and priced them according to the current market value of gold, asserting that the artist's essence, even their bodily waste, held inherent value once presented as art. Many tins have since been sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, making it one of the most conceptually daring and controversial artworks of the 20th century.
