Did You Know? The Pistol Shrimp's Superpower: A Bubble That Boils Water!
The tiny pistol shrimp can snap its claw to create a cavitation bubble that briefly reaches temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun and generates a sound louder than a gunshot!
This incredible feat is achieved through a phenomenon called 'cavitation.' When the shrimp rapidly closes its specialized claw, it creates a high-speed water jet, forming a low-pressure bubble that then implodes. The collapse of this bubble generates a shockwave, light (sonoluminescence), and extreme heat (around 5,000 Kelvin) and pressures, used to stun or kill prey. It's one of the loudest biological sounds in the ocean, capable of interfering with sonar. This amazing weapon makes the pistol shrimp a formidable predator despite its small size.
