In 1991, researchers at the University of Cambridge created the world's first webcam not for security or video calls, but purely to monitor a coffee pot, saving them wasted trips to an empty brew.
The 'Trojan Room coffee pot' webcam was born out of shared frustration among computer scientists in the University's Computer Laboratory. Tired of making the trek to the Trojan Room, only to find the coffee pot empty, they set up a camera pointing at the pot, hooked it up to their internal network, and displayed a grayscale image on their computers. When the internet became widely accessible a few years later, the live feed was connected to the web, attracting millions of viewers worldwide and becoming an early internet sensation before being switched off in 2001. This whimsical invention unintentionally paved the way for modern-day live streaming and remote monitoring technologies.
