Did you know? The largest single organism on Earth isn't a whale or a giant redwood, but a colossal fungus whose underground network, called mycelium, can stretch for miles and weigh hundreds of tons.
This subterranean giant is typically *Armillaria ostoyae*, also known as the honey mushroom. One famous specimen in Oregon's Malheur National Forest covers an astonishing 2,200 acres (about 3.4 square miles) and is estimated to be thousands of years old. While the visible mushrooms are merely its fruiting bodies, the true organism is an immense network of mycelial filaments spreading through the soil, making it one of the heaviest and oldest living organisms known.
