Epicureanism: Not Hedonistic Feasting, But Peaceful Tranquility!

Contrary to popular belief, the ancient Greek philosophy of Epicureanism did not advocate for lavish feasts and excessive indulgence, but rather for a life of modest pleasure, tranquility (ataraxia), and freedom from pain and fear.

Epicurus taught that true pleasure was the absence of pain in the body and disturbance in the soul, primarily achieved through moderation, self-sufficiency, and friendship. He believed that intense sensual pleasures often lead to discomfort and suffering in the long run, advocating instead for simple meals and intellectual pursuits. For Epicurus, the greatest good was a peaceful, contented mind, free from anxiety about death or the gods, found in a garden with friends, not in orgies of consumption.
