Forget Antibiotics? Meet the Microbe-Eating Viruses!

For nearly a century, viruses known as bacteriophages have been used in Eastern European medicine to fight bacterial infections, offering a potential alternative to antibiotics, especially for drug-resistant strains. These "bacteria-eaters" specifically target and destroy pathogenic bacteria without harming human cells.

Discovered independently in the early 20th century, bacteriophages fell out of favor in Western medicine with the advent of penicillin. However, research into phage therapy has seen a significant resurgence due to the global crisis of antibiotic resistance. Phages are abundant in nature and can be highly specific, meaning they can eliminate harmful bacteria while preserving beneficial gut flora, a significant advantage over broad-spectrum antibiotics. Their unique mechanism makes them promising for treating infections untreatable by conventional drugs.
