Hagfish: The Ocean's Slimy Escape Artists!
Did you know? When threatened, hagfish can transform almost instantly into a gelatinous mass, releasing an astonishing amount of sticky, fibrous slime that can choke a predator in seconds.
Hagfish possess specialized glands along their bodies that, upon stimulation, release two components: mucins and protein threads. When these components mix with seawater, they rapidly expand and intertwine to form a massive volume of extremely durable and sticky slime. This remarkable defense clogs the gills and mouth of attacking fish, forcing them to retreat. After a successful sliming, the hagfish can cleverly tie its own body into a knot, starting from its tail, to scrape off the excess slime and return to its streamlined form.
