In ancient Sumerian and Babylonian mythology, the *lilitu* were believed to be malevolent wind spirits or night demons, often associated with owls and considered particularly dangerous to pregnant women and infants. These ancient Semitic demons, whose presence is recorded in texts as early as the Sumerian King List and later in the Babylonian Talmud, are thought to be the precursors to the singular, iconic figure of Lilith.
