The 18th-century "Digesting Duck" automaton by Jacques de Vaucanson could not only quack, drink, and flap its wings but also seemingly eat grain and digest it, shocking audiences with its lifelike complexity.
Created in 1739, Vaucanson's Duck was a marvel of mechanical engineering, featuring over 400 moving parts in each wing alone to simulate realistic movements. While it appeared to digest food, the process was an elaborate illusion: the duck stored pre-digested food to "excrete" and used a separate compartment to collect the grain it "ate." Despite this trickery, it represented an unprecedented attempt to mimic biological processes through machinery, sparking philosophical discussions about the nature of life and consciousness.
