The Bizarre Dancing Plague of 1518: Did People Really Dance to Death?

In the summer of 1518, a mysterious 'dancing plague' struck Strasbourg, where hundreds of people compulsively danced for days or even weeks, leading to exhaustion, heart attacks, and some deaths.

The phenomenon, known as choreomania, began with a woman named Frau Troffea and quickly spread, affecting up to 400 individuals. Explanations range from mass psychogenic illness, potentially triggered by severe stress, famine, and widespread superstition in medieval Europe, to theories of ergot poisoning, though the latter is often disputed. Amazingly, city authorities at one point encouraged the dancing, believing it was the only way for the afflicted to recover, setting up stages and hiring musicians, only to eventually ban it as the death toll rose.
