The Faith Without Clergy: Baha'is Elect Their Leaders

Instead of a clerical hierarchy, Baha'i communities are governed by elected administrative bodies at local, national, and international levels, known as Spiritual Assemblies. This unique structure, established by its founder Baháʼu'lláh, emphasizes the direct relationship between the individual and God, promoting consultation and discouraging the development of an intermediary class. Every adult Baha'i is eligible to be elected, and elections are held annually, fostering a highly participatory and decentralized form of religious governance.
