The Pistol Shrimp's Punch: Hotter Than the Sun's Surface!
Did you know that the tiny pistol shrimp can snap its claw to create a bubble that briefly reaches temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun?
When a pistol shrimp (also known as a snapping shrimp) rapidly closes its specialized claw, it generates a cavitation bubble. This bubble collapses with such immense force that it produces a shockwave, light (a phenomenon called sonoluminescence), and a temporary hot spot reaching up to 5,000 Kelvin (about 4,700°C or 8,500°F). This temperature is comparable to the sun's surface. This incredible feat is used by the shrimp to stun or kill prey, showcasing a unique application of extreme physics in the animal kingdom.
