The Sea Slug That Sucks Up Solar Power Like a Plant!
Some marine animals, like the emerald green sea slug (Elysia chlorotica), possess a remarkable ability to perform photosynthesis by 'stealing' genes and organelles from the algae they consume. This allows them to produce their own food from sunlight for extended periods after their last meal.
This extraordinary process, known as kleptoplasty, involves the slug incorporating intact chloroplasts from its algal diet into its own digestive cells. Even more astonishingly, the slug integrates some of the algal genes necessary for photosynthesis into its own chromosomes. These stolen genes are then expressed by the slug, enabling it to maintain and utilize the stolen chloroplasts to generate energy. While the sea slug is a prime example of such horizontal gene transfer, it highlights the surprising ways life adapts and redefines the boundaries between kingdoms.
