The Treadmill's Surprising Start: Not for Fitness, But Punishment

The modern treadmill, a ubiquitous gym fixture, was originally designed in 19th-century Britain as a grueling penal device to punish prisoners through endless, monotonous labor.

Invented by Sir William Cubitt in 1818, the prison treadmill forced inmates to climb steps on a rotating cylinder, often for six hours a day, equivalent to scaling thousands of feet. This harsh regimen, initially intended for reformation and productive labor like grinding grain or pumping water, was widely condemned for its cruelty and lack of rehabilitative value. By the late 19th century, its use as a punitive measure was largely phased out. It wasn't until the 1960s that Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper adapted the concept for medical cardiac stress testing, paving the way for its modern-day role as a fitness machine.
