A medieval conflict known as the "War of the Bucket" was famously sparked in 1325 after soldiers from Modena stole an oaken bucket from a city well in Bologna. This seemingly trivial act escalated into a full-scale battle involving thousands of troops.
While the purloined bucket served as a symbolic casus belli, the true roots of the conflict between the rival city-states of Modena and Bologna lay in long-standing political and territorial animosity, reflecting the broader Guelf and Ghibelline struggles across Italy. The resulting Battle of Zappolino, one of the largest clashes of the era, ended in a decisive victory for Modena. Today, the original, unassuming wooden bucket is still proudly displayed in Modena's Torre della Ghirlandina, serving as a peculiar, centuries-old trophy of war.
