The Wheeled Suitcase: A Surprisingly Recent Innovation
Most people assume wheeled luggage has been around forever, but the first patent for a suitcase with wheels wasn't granted until 1970, a surprisingly late invention given humanity's long history of travel.
Before the 1970s, travelers often had to carry their heavy bags or hire porters, leading to significant physical strain. Bernard Sadow, a sales manager, observed an airport worker effortlessly moving heavy machinery on a wheeled dolly, sparking his idea for "Rolling Luggage" with four casters and a strap. His invention initially faced resistance, as department stores doubted men would want to pull their own bags. It took another generation for the upright "Rollaboard" with an extendable handle, invented by Northwest Airlines pilot Robert Plath in 1987, to truly revolutionize airport navigation.
