The World's First Production Motorcycle: No Pedals, Push-Start Only!
The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, widely recognized as the world's first series-production motorcycle, astonishingly lacked pedals; riders had to push it like a balance bike or coast downhill to kickstart its engine.
Patented in 1894, this pioneering machine featured a twin-cylinder, water-cooled four-stroke engine that directly drove the rear wheel, with its frame ingeniously doubling as the radiator. Its distinctive design also included massive external flywheel cylinders and utilized rubber bands for valve return. While it could only achieve a modest top speed of about 28 mph (45 km/h), this mechanical marvel laid crucial groundwork for future motorcycle development despite its unusual starting method. Production was limited, with only a few hundred units ever built.
