Victor Hugo's Radical Writing Cure: No Clothes, No Procrastination
To overcome severe procrastination and meet his publisher's deadline for *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame*, Victor Hugo once instructed his valet to lock away all his regular clothes, preventing him from leaving his study until the novel was complete.
Hugo had signed a contract in 1829, agreeing to deliver his new novel by February 1831, but he spent much of the intervening time on other projects. Faced with the impending, strict deadline, he resorted to extreme measures: he purchased a bottle of ink and a gray woolen shawl, and then gave his valet strict instructions to secure his everyday attire. This drastic, self-imposed isolation ensured he had no choice but to remain at his desk and write, only re-emerging once the entire groundbreaking manuscript was finished in a remarkable six months.
