Detecting them is incredibly challenging as they don't emit their own light and aren't backlit by a sun. Scientists often rely on 'gravitational microlensing,' where the planet's gravity temporarily magnifies light from a distant background star, to infer their presence. These cosmic orphans offer a unique perspective on planet formation and the potential for life in entirely different environments, far from the warmth of a parent star.
