What Does Space Really Smell Like? Hint: Not Just Nothingness!
Astronauts returning from spacewalks consistently report a very distinct, pungent smell clinging to their suits and equipment, often described as a mix of hot metal, burnt steak, welding fumes, or even raspberries and rum.
This unique 'smell of space' isn't something experienced in the vacuum itself, as there's no air to carry scent. Instead, the odor is believed to be caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – molecules produced by dying stars – adhering to suits and tools. When these items are brought back into the pressurized cabin and exposed to oxygen, these molecules react and release their characteristic scent. Scientists have even created 'space odorant' samples to help train astronauts for the sensory experiences of life beyond Earth.
