The Unexpected Scent of the Cosmos: What Do Astronauts Smell?
Astronauts returning from spacewalks often report a surprisingly distinct odor clinging to their suits and equipment, typically described as metallic, like seared steak, hot metal, or even welding fumes.
This isn't the smell of space itself, as the vacuum of space cannot carry scent molecules. Instead, the unique aroma is believed to originate from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – tiny particles found in the vacuum, thought to be remnants of dying stars. These PAHs cling to spacesuits and equipment, and when exposed to oxygen inside the spacecraft, they react to produce the distinctive, somewhat acrid scent, offering a primordial whiff of interstellar chemistry.
