Bubble Wrap: From 3D Wallpaper to Poppable Packaging Perfection
Did you know? Bubble Wrap, now a ubiquitous material for protecting fragile items and a source of satisfying pops, was originally conceived as a textured 3D wallpaper.
In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes created the 'air bubble' product by sealing two shower curtains together, trapping air bubbles inside. Their initial vision was to market it as innovative three-dimensional wallpaper, but the concept failed to gain traction. They then explored other uses, including greenhouse insulation. It wasn't until an IBM employee sought a material to protect the new IBM 1401 computer during shipping that Bubble Wrap found its true purpose, forever changing the world of packaging.
