Capgras delusion is a rare psychiatric condition where an individual firmly believes that a close relative or friend has been replaced by an identical imposter. Despite their familiar appearance, the person insists they are not the real loved one.

Researchers theorize it may arise from a disconnection between the brain's visual recognition areas and the limbic system, which processes emotions. The patient recognizes the face but lacks the usual emotional 'spark' of familiarity, leading to the bizarre conclusion that the person is a sophisticated duplicate.
