This rare neuropsychiatric disorder is named after Joseph Capgras, who first described the condition in 1923. It often occurs in individuals with underlying neurological conditions like brain injury, dementia, or psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia. The prevailing theory suggests a disconnect between the brain's visual processing centers and the limbic system, which is responsible for emotional responses and memory. While the patient can physically identify the person, they don't experience the usual emotional 'spark' or warmth, leading their brain to rationalize this incongruity by concluding the person must be a duplicate.
