The Frequency Illusion: Why New Discoveries Seem to Pop Up Everywhere

Ever learned a new word or noticed a particular car model, only to suddenly see it everywhere? This common cognitive bias, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, isn't a cosmic coincidence, but a trick of your own mind.

The Frequency Illusion is a two-part cognitive process. First, selective attention makes you more likely to notice the newly encountered item, word, or concept because your brain has deemed it important enough to register. Second, confirmation bias then causes your brain to actively look for and confirm the presence of this item, reinforcing the perception that it's appearing more frequently than before. This phenomenon highlights how our internal mental states significantly shape our perception of external reality, making us more attuned to what we've recently focused on.
