The Pythagoreans believed all numbers could be expressed as ratios, and this concept shattered their mathematical harmony.
The secretive Pythagorean brotherhood held that the universe was governed by whole numbers and their ratios, viewing this as a divine order. When Hippasus of Metapontum demonstrated that the diagonal of a unit square (√2) could not be expressed as a simple fraction, it challenged their fundamental beliefs. This 'incommensurable' quantity was deemed so dangerous to their worldview that, according to some accounts, Hippasus was banished or even drowned by his fellow Pythagoreans to preserve their numerical cosmology.
