The Somerton Man: An Unsolved Mystery of Secret Codes & Poison
In 1948, an unidentified man was found dead on an Australian beach with a cryptic slip of paper sewn into his trousers pocket, bearing the words 'Taman Shud,' Persian for 'finished' or 'ended.' The mystery only deepened with traces of an unidentifiable poison and a coded note found among his belongings.
The man's body showed no clear cause of death, but an autopsy suggested poisoning that left no trace in standard tests. Authorities later discovered a suitcase containing clothes with all identifying labels removed, and a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam missing its final page – from which the 'Taman Shud' slip was torn. Inside the book, investigators found handwritten letters that resembled a code, and a phone number leading to a local woman who denied knowing him but appeared visibly shaken. Despite theories ranging from espionage to a tragic love affair, the Somerton Man remains unidentified, and the meaning of his death and the enigmatic clues is still hotly debated.
