Tourists Beware: "Paris Syndrome" Can Turn Dreams of Paris into Distress

Did you know that some tourists, particularly from Japan, experience a severe culture shock and psychological distress known as "Paris Syndrome" when their idealized vision of Paris clashes with the city's reality?

This transient psychological disorder is characterized by symptoms ranging from acute delusions and hallucinations to dizziness, sweating, and feelings of persecution. It's believed to be exacerbated by language barriers, cultural differences, the exhaustion of long-haul travel, and the immense pressure of living up to a highly romanticized image of the French capital. While temporary, the distress can be so profound that the Japanese embassy in Paris reportedly has a 24-hour hotline and, in rare cases, helps arrange for affected tourists to return home early.
