The Mafia's Sour Start: Protecting Lemons, Not Bootlegging

Did you know? The Sicilian Mafia, far from its gangster movie image, actually began in the 19th century protecting valuable citrus groves from theft and vandalism, long before Prohibition-era bootlegging.

In the mid-1800s, Sicily's lemon exports to Europe were booming, creating immense wealth but also making landowners targets for bandits and rival factions. With the newly unified Italian state offering little effective protection, desperate grove owners hired local strongmen, or 'mafiosi,' to guard their property. These early mafiosi formed private security operations, enforcing their own rules and gradually consolidating power, evolving from hired guards into formidable organized crime syndicates that exerted control over vast territories through violence and intimidation.
